I am competing at the novice level in eventing and was wondering if anyone could put together a training fitness program for me, and for my horse. I need a stronger core, stronger arms, and stronger legs. I also need to beable to not run out of breath so quikly, and suggestions?

Try the Lil Jack workout http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKCGe2Ezris It eally works
Swimming will do all of those things.
No stirrups! Best thing ever. Gets you in shape, gives the horse exercise. One of the trainers I ride with has a monthly hunter/jumper boot camp where you spend all day taking lessons on different horses. These are her favorite exercises she likes to "torture" us with.( You may want to do this in a round pen or longe line.)
Start off in the walk. Drop your stirrups, stretch your legs down. Put them back to where they would be with stirrups, and start posting. It’s really hard at first, but it works well. Try two-point in walk. Get your butt out of the saddle high enough that you can see day light while keeping your legs in place. You’ll really feel the burn after five or ten minutes of this.
In trot, sit it for a minute or two, start posting, and swing your leg forward like you’re in an easy chair so you are posting entirely from your thighs. Swing your leg way back and repeat. Good for thighs and core.
In canter, get into two point if you have good enough balance for a little bit. Sit back down and swing your legs like before. This will improve your balance.
Arms, core, etc:
Buy an inflatable fitness ball. It should come with exercises, but if it doesn’t, here are some good ones:
-Sit-ups: Put the ball under your bum and put your feet on the floor so that your head is lower than your hips. Do fifty sit ups like this for the first week, sixty the next, etc.
-Push -ups: Basically, this is a more challenging version of girl push-ups. Put the ball under your feet and do some push ups. you have to balance and hold yourself with your core or else you’ll tip over. An easier way to do this would be to put the ball under your knees or lower legs.
The key is to increase how many reps of the exercises you do ten percent every week. When you ride, increase the time you go without stirrups ten percent too.
HORSE: (Wow, this is getting long….)
Trot uphill. This works wonders!
Make grids. 101 Jumping Exercises is full of good ideas.
Start working on lateral movements. This will make your horse more supple and responsive. Start out with leg yeilds, then start working on shoulder-in on a circle.

I compete at preliminary level eventing, and let me tell you my secret. I run. A lot. And I work out. And it gets you really fit.
I would begin with basic conditioning. In english – running. build yourself up untill its harder and harder to tire you. Then begin basic strength, sit ups, pushups, bicep curl, lat pull downs, squats etc.
Pilates will help strengthen your core! I do Preliminary level and pilates helps a lot!!! My coach is an Olympic level coach in eventing and she told me to do them last summer when I kept hurting my back! It’s amazing!
Running, biking, swimming…all help for stronger arms, legs, and breathing. I would probably go with swimming. It helps all three.
