Michael Shermer, since you showed up here in Brazil and showed your works(books, etc.) i’ve become your fan!!! Sorry for my poor english! Hug
Wow we need more of this, well done dudes.
You do realize that this is all internal. The way you think affects YOUR actions, not anything outside. If you think right/optimistic, you will take actions that will help achieve your goal. That’s not a big revelation or a solid message.
More of this! 😀
I said it was over the top. The packaging is garish, but the message is legit. The idea of it being a “secret” is of course silly, though many people may feel like it’s a secret they’ve been let in on. But the issue here is that the message was NOT that if you imagine something you will just get it, but that by thinking about and focussing on some goal, you will change your behavior which can help you achieve your goal. Some people may misinterpret that, but that’s another issue.
I wish I wish I wish for pancakes.
Is it ok for an atheist to pray for someone’s death? Justice Scalia can never be fired and Justice Thomas is as helpful as a pet rock. Lets all pray for one of their death’s by natural causes on July 7.
Does the law of attraction work for stalkers?
The best answer to the “Law of Attraction” nonsense is the same as the answer to the idea of prayer: if it works, then why don’t amputees ever grow back a lost limb? Why is it always about mundane stuff like getting a bike or making money or finding a parking place — stuff that would have happened anyway if you worked hard enough for it? Are the powers of the Universe limited? LOA is just the old concept of prayer/voodoo without the idea of a God.
But The Secret doesn’t claim that “you are more likely to achieve your goal” — it claims that you are 100% positively absolutely GUARANTEED to get your goal. That’s what makes it bullshit.
Ehm, it’s a satire? Ever seen one that’s NOT over the top? But the guys behind the secret are SELLING the idea by giving expensive lectures on something that is common place. It’s legal to fleece numpties, but it’s also unethical.
Yes, very good, it is satire. The usage of Mythbusters symbols is clever and the jokes are fun. But you are still missing the point. What you are complaining about is NOT what Michael and Brian are satirizing. They are also not just trying to be funny, they are trying to expose “The Secret” by refuting something never expressed (at least for the part I watched) by those in the movie. I’m not sure how I can make it any clearer what my very specific complaint is.
I’ll take you at your word for now, and I will watch the movie so I can be better informed. However assuming this is the case, perhaps a more subtle approach would be more effective. I’ve found many of the other videos these two have done to be funny and insightful, but I don’t see the insight in this one. Even assuming this video was targeted only at “the choir”, it gives a pretty skewed perspective of “The Secret”. For LOA “believers” I think it will be an instant turn-off.
So, what do the real Adam and Jamie think of this? (I have a feeling they liked it.)
This is a pretty lame satire. I expected professional debunking, not Shermer laughing at how witty he is.
Funny :-)
Why is everyone here taking all of this stuff so literal? It frustrates me because you guys want to speak FLYING into existence. You guys want to create time machines, and play with dinosaurs. Like cmon. Thats not what the law of attraction is about AT ALL. The law of attraction is simply saying, you get in life what you speak you want, for example, you wish to be a successful engineer. If you go around speaking you will be a successful engineer and working towards that, your words will push you
to work harder and your mind will automatically start looking for ways to make that so. Your mind is kicked in overdrive and is constantly looking for opportunities where you can better yourself, where you can learn, where you can become a successful engineer. Its not that you are going to sit on your ass and wait for it to come. You guys are expecting magic. Same applies to everything. If your constantly saying you suck at life, that you will never be a good engineer, guess what will happen?
The law of attraction is like prayer, If you are praying to grow back a limb, or to become supernatural it wont happen. Its not that the universe is limited, is that its just not “possible”( I dont like saying something is impossible) But if we pray for happiness, if we pray for an abundance of wealth, if we pray for our families happiness, and success, we start putting our energy towards that. What do you guys prefer? Be the negative person that no one likes ? The “realist” ?
Stop taking everything so literal, the law of attraction is in every success oriented book. Its the basis of ALL success principles. So you saying the law of attraction is wrong is contradicting people like napolean hill, dale carnegie, ralph waldo emerson, Jim stovall, peter legge, and thousands more. The power of the spoken word. We are and we get what we speak in life. If you dont agree, and you want to refer to mass murders, or the fact we can’t time travel, or grow a limb, then grow up.
“Stop taking everything so literal”
Your 4 post rant is tantamount to spam. But even so, your watered down, not so literal take on the law of attraction still fails miserably. So what if you see this as contradicting a few names? Lots of people have become rich and famous selling bullshit ideas to gullible people. So what if “we” pray for things? (speak for yourself) It doesn’t mean prayer works. Not one of your examples can be shown to be any actual and significant influence on life. Empty.
Then go ahead. Tell me where you are in life and tell me where everyone else who has applied these principles are. If you want to argue as broke person, then go ahead. I will stand by the principles of people who have what i want in life. Period
“I will stand by the principles of people who have what i want”
Ever notice how many people sell sure fire methods of winning the lottery, or making it rich in the stock market, etc? These people have never won a lottery, never made a buck in the stock market, but they still make money : from people that believe in the words that they sell. Words are cheap. So believe whatever you want. But If you say we shouldn’t call bullshit when we smell bullshit, you are going to need some evidence.
use the force
Some of you are confusing the “Law of Attraction” with the power of positive thinking. The two are NOT the same thing! Positive thinking is a fairly solid concept. If you think positively, you are more likely to take positive action and get positive results. That’s fine. LOA on the other hand says that you are 100% GUARANTEED to get what you want, which is a lie. There are no guarantees in life.
