Are there exercises I can do to get into shape for this sport?

I fully understand it takes a good deal of physical fitness and I want to start at the core basics, i’m a little out of shape and I want to know what are some exercise next running that I can do to get in shape for the wonderful sport? (pushups?,situps?,how many miles of running a day?)

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I really want to dedicate myself to this and do things as properly as possible.
