They are also more spiritual and less selfish. Modern Western philosophies (take Scientology, for instance) are me-focused and all about happiness, not spiritual enlightenment. Eastern Philosophies mostly teach that happiness is the result of spiritual enlightenment, and that such enlightenment is obtained through caring for the well being of others. Western philosophies like to skip the caring for others part and jump right into personal happiness without being spiritually uplifted. Make Cake Not War on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 The western religions have been contaminated into divisive, political ideologies, whereas some of the Eastern ones are most focused on happiness and personal well-being. Shlomo on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 Because Western "spiritual leaders" are too materialistic Anonymous on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 No, they’ve been corrupted and commercialized. I think it is because Eastern philosophies deal more with the self than with a being (or beings) of supernatural qualities. (Although obviously not all Eastern philosophies do this, there are much less Western ones that don’t.) Em! on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 There is, but I’ve come to find that the Eastern philosophies are more fulfilling, personally. I don’t follow an Eastern originating religion, though. Ross on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 They are either picking up missed stitches or making new ones. Libertine Saint on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 The west has a pretty limited philosophy and relgion pool these days. In the US, most people are raised Christian. They already have experience with that religion. So if they want to search fopr something else, it is going to be outside of that cultural realm. TaZ on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 Every major religion originated in Asia. Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism … West has nothing to offer, spiritually. That is they come up with weird things, of late! . Austin, TX on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 Great question! God hardwired us, so to speak, to seek Him out. Many people seeking God don’t want to give up being their own god in place of the one true God. The best place to do that is with just about any of the eastern philosophies, and almost all new age spirituality stuff because they all want to you to believe that God is in everything which means that He is in you which means that you are God. Of course that’s not true but it does pander to those who are seeking Him but don’t want to submit to His will. They think they have the best of all – but God told us (see the very first Commandment) to put no other gods before Him. This is exactly what one does when one tries to be their own god. So very sad. m0orT0o on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 Personally speaking after successfully concluding that all western religions and god concepts were rubbish designed to offer a support structure to the ruling classes. I then felt the need to check eastern religious concepts as well. The result was the same and the conclusion that only atheism made any sense at all. This led of course to the study of Buddhism which I dismissed as cowardly and narcissistic and hinduism which I dismissed as a support structure for the dreadful caste system that exists in India to this day, atheism is the only intelligent conclusion possible BornFREE on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 Tiredof the judeo Christianity nonsense… Rocky on 2011/01/01 at 03:18 It is not really the spirituality of the Eastern philosophies being sought, but the freedoms from a God among the Christians that put way too many restrictions upon people seeking to live a worldly life. If a person wants to be Gay, their is the knowledge that God does not approve of that life style. If it is alcohol and night lifing, no, do not do that. If it is sex without marriage, also a no no. Drug usage, mistresses, fornication, adultery on and on the world’s way leads to God’s disapproval. Since the Western culture and government was originated around people seeking God, this culture is full of the NO’s. The modern man wants to be free to seek his own will—he is free, there are no laws that force people to live the Christian law but their conscience condemns them. So let us look at the Eastern philosophies: Confucius say let us observe man, when he makes a mistake, we will do the opposite. Buddha: "One thing I teach: suffering and the end of suffering. It is just ill and the ceasing of ill that I proclaim." . Life is like a circle. Catholicism: salvation is through the church, the Catholic church, all others are lost. Christianity: Only Jesus can save, only He can provide the path to God. Hinduism: "When you hear about the Self, meditate upon the Self, and finally realize the Self…you come to understand everything in life." Islam: "Righteous is he who believes in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Scriptures and the Prophets." Do you see how you as a person must work this out, no Jesus to depend upon for strength. Shinto: Shintoists insist on maintaining their own characteristics and inner depth while working toward the peaceful coexistence of human beings. Wicca: "Wiccans believe that the spirit of the One, Goddess and God exist in all things. In the trees, rain, flowers, the sea, in each other and all of natures creatures. This means that we must treat ‘all things’ of the Earth as aspects of the divine." If you have a spiritual problem, talk to your cat about it, there is your god present in that creature. Those are some of the Eastern, and a touch of the Western. Let me say this. There is but one Living God and he is found predominately within the Christian Church, some in Judaism, but not Muslim and not Islam as they claim. Every man is a sinner. Every sinner must pay the wages of sin which is death. Jesus provided himself as a substitute for the payment of the sin wages. Accepting him accepts the payment and we are given eternal life. No Eastern philosophy, nor religion can give man the path to God. Now western substitute Christian cult, nor man religion can take the place of Jesus as the path to God. So the only thing the Eastern philosophies may provide a salve to their conscience for the sins being committed in disobedience to God.
